Mollie Thomas (West Hollywood) and Jenelle Hutcherson (Long Beach) were recruited to run for Miss California and are out lesbians. Neither one captured the title that would take them on to Miss USA, but it is still amazing that they were selected by the historically conservative pageant committee.
This is fascinating because it clearly differentiates lesbians from feminists. No storming the pageant in meat dresses. Both contestants wanted to become role models by using the traditional and loaded platform of beauty contest. Good for these young women, breaking stereotypes and showing the diversity of the LGBT community.
